Montgomery Youth Orchestra

2026-2027 Season

The Montgomery Youth Orchestra is sponsored by the Montgomery Symphony League. With the League’s guidance and financial support, the Youth Orchestra rehearses weekly to prepare two concerts each season which are offered to the public without charge.

MYO is comprised of approximately 70 young musicians from public and private schools throughout central Alabama who have a love of classical music and a desire to improve their skills while performing in an ensemble.

AUDITIONS:
Placement in the orchestra is by audition, which will be held on September 12, 2026 at Trinity Presbyterian Church. You must register for a time slot here. 

REHEARSALS:
Rehearsals are held each Saturday morning throughout the school year at Trinity Presbyterian Church.  For our schedule, click here

PERFORMANCES:
Montgomery Youth Orchestra Concerts are free to the public.

The Winter Concert will be held on Saturday, December 12, 2026 at Troy University’s Davis Theatre for Performing Arts at 2:00pm. (Students must arrive by 12pm.)

The Spring Concert will be held on Sunday, May 2, 2027 at Troy University’s Davis Theatre for Performing Arts at 2:00pm. (Students must arrive by 12:00pm.)

MYO MUSIC STUDY GRANTS:
MYO members are eligible to apply for grants to encourage their musical talents. Funded by the Montgomery Symphony League, Music Study Grants are available to help support participation at summer music camps and festivals, participate in private lessons, and purchase needed instruments and materials.

MEET MAESTRA LAURA WALTERS
Maestra Laura Walters is serving her fifth season as Conductor of the Montgomery Youth Orchestra. Both a public school teacher and a musician, she performs on her primary instrument, double bass, with the Montgomery Symphony Orchestra. A native of Dayton, Ohio, she came to Alabama to earn a bachelor’s degree in music education from The University of Alabama. Maestra Walters taught secondary orchestra and band in Birmingham City Schools, Montgomery Public Schools, and Pike Road Schools for a decade. Each school year her instrumental ensembles participated in the Alabama Bandmaster’s Association and the Alabama Orchestra Association’s All-District Music Performance Assessments, receiving Superior ratings. Maestra Laura Walters is the founding music teacher at Ivy Classical Academy in Prattville, AL where she was awarded Teacher of the Year for the 2024-2025 school year. Other recent achievements, Maestra Walters earned her master’s degree from the University of Alabama in Educational Leadership. Maestra Walters was invited to conduct the University of North Alabama Orchestra Festival and the Alabama Orchestra Association’s North Region Orchestra Festival.
